In 1908 Zermelo introduced his Axiom of Separation, a variant of the Axiom of Abstraction, to try to avoid paradoxes such as Russell’s Paradox, a paradox of self-membership and non-self-membership that is inherent in the Axiom of Abstraction. But... the Axiom of Separation suffers from the same disease as the Axiom of Abstraction, one that Zermelo considered fatal.
